January might just be the most magical month to explore Brixham on foot. The air is crisp, the harbour is quiet, and the winter light transforms the coastline into something genuinely special.
As locals, we know exactly where to head this season, so here are our favourite sunrise and sunset walks for those willing to brave the cooler mornings and wrap up for golden-hour strolls.
Sunrise at Berry Head
If you only do one January sunrise walk, make it Berry Head. Set your alarm early, grab a flask of something warm, and wander up the path towards the headland. The climb isn’t too demanding, and the payoff is incredible. On clear January mornings, the sun lifts straight over the curve of Torbay, washing the cliffs in soft pinks and golds. You’ll often have the whole place to yourself, except for a few fellow early birds and the guillemots calling from the cliffs below.
Locals love this spot because it feels wild and quiet, even though it’s only a short walk from the town centre. Head right out to the lighthouse for an uninterrupted view or stop near the fort where the wind is a little gentler – you might even spot a dolphin or two!
Sunset Along the Breakwater
Brixham’s Breakwater is a favourite at any time of year, but in January the sunsets can be astonishing. The low winter sun drops behind the marina, turning the masts into silhouettes and setting the water glowing orange and copper. Start your walk at the harbour, follow past the fishing boats, and stroll all the way to the lighthouse for the full show.
On really still evenings, the reflections across the bay look almost like glass. And if you’re lucky, you might spot seals – local legends, Bob and Not Bob – popping up around the end of the Breakwater!
Shoalstone to Fishcombe
For those who want both sunrise and sunset potential, take the Shoalstone to Fishcombe Cove route. Shoalstone offers wide-open sea views for sunrise, while Fishcombe, tucked into woodland, glows beautifully as the sun sets behind the cliffs, which is no doubt why it became one of Agatha Christie’s favourite swimming spots! It’s a short walk, easy underfoot, and one of the most peaceful winter routes in town.
